Plein Air Painting on a Greek Island

Plein Air Painting in the Famous Greek Island Air

The air and light of Greece has attracted artists for a longer time than any other places known to mankind.

Now Ron Johnson, well known plein air painter and instructor from Cincinnati, Ohio has teamed with Michael and Karin Shepherd, hoteliers of Aliki, Paros, Greece to offer superior instruction and hospitality in an incomparable setting, at an unusually low cost.

Ron will be teaching "plein air" techniques that allow the artist to complete a painting on site. Students will
paint at a different island location each of five days with lots of one-on-one instruction in composition, color, paint application, drawing and self critique. Students must have some prior knowledge of oil painting techniques before they arrive at this sensational outdoor location.

The program has the exclusive use of Shepherd's Marinio Studios and includes a mix of socialising and time for Paros's numerous beaches, shops and nightspots. There will be dinner parties and receptions with other artists as well. For $799 (750) the Aliki Art Workshop offers one week of lodging, food, transportation, and painting. Greek fun and friendliness are free extras. Air transportation to Athens is the only additional cost. Class size is limited to 12 for quality instruction but non-painting partners are welcome at a reduced rate.

About the Instructor: Ronald Joe Johnson a native of North Carolina moved to Cincinnati in 1973 to attend the Art Academy of Cincinnati. He joined the faculty there in 1977 and received his MFA from the U. of Cincinnati in 1978.

Ron has won many awards and scholarships. Detail of these, his exhibitions and collections can be found on his web site: www.rjart.com

In 1980 he opened his business, Ron Johnson Illustration/Design. He has worked with a variety of local businesses for the past 20 years. Now he paints in and around Cincinnati, in Florida, and in New England. In 2000 he took a trip to Greece to revisit and paint. In the spring of 2001, he spent some time in Italy where he captured the ideals of the Roman scenery. Since 1993 he has taken painting trips to New England. Recently, Ron began teaching plein air oil classes. He teaches painting techniques that work well outdoors as well as in the studio. Students learn painting techniques that help them make good decisions quickly, then apply them to their paintings

Ron Johnson says, "The class is oriented to those who have painted, but haven't painted outdoors. More advanced outdoor painters would, undoubtedly, also find the instruction and experience rewarding. Each session will be designed to suit the students enrolled. Sometimes I give a short talk about painting covering the materials and composition. But more often, I give a demonstration. I paint a painting in 2 hours giving step-by-step instruction as to what I am doing and why. I hand out a sheet that describes what these steps are and how the student can use them to help make good quick decisions. As students paint, I give lots of one-on-one instruction repeating the information I showed in the demonstration (each painter will have strong and weak points). Other students usually overhear these conversations and mini demonstrations, which seems to help everyone. There are additional handouts such as, "the structure in composition".
My instruction covers composition, understanding color, drawing techniques, and application of paint. In addition, I talk about whatever the student thinks is important."
